In words and song 'The Fighting Irish and Uncle Sam' tells the story of the Irish emigrants experience of the US military, one of the few sources of employment open to Irish men in the mid 19th century. Historian and broadcaster Myles Dungan, author of 'Distant Drums: Irish Veterans of Foreign Armies' and 'How the Irish Won the West' has chosen some of the most poignant, uplifting and amusing stories of those many thousands of Irish veterans and Matthew Gilsenan of the Celtic Tenors has selected some of the most stirring, affecting and humorous songs associated with those narratives. Where no song exists traditional melodies have been chosen and lyrics added to tell the stories of the likes of the rebellious John Riley, the legendary Michael Corcoran and the mythical Myles O’Reilly.
